Have you heard the Chinese folktales about Houyi shooting down the suns, Chang’e flying to the moon, the mouse bride, Cai Lun inventing paper, or borrowing arrows with straw boats? Have you seen the elegant strokes of Chinese pictographs written with a brush or the black, gray, and white tones of ink paintings on rice paper?
From July 28-August 15, 2025, CAIS Firedragon Preschool Summer Camp will launch a session on Chinese Ink Painting and Story Theater. Teachers will share captivating Chinese folktales and inspire children’s empathy, curiosity, and creativity through open-ended story theater, musical movement, and physical activities. Children will learn to “truly see, truly listen, and truly feel,” engaging their senses to express their ideas and emotions.
Session 3 Camp Highlights
- Children will engage with Chinese folktales through sensory exploration.
- Children will practice Five Senses Mindfulness daily, starting each day with a warm-up that uses different sensory experiences to cultivate awareness and sensitivity through mindful breathing
- Through story theater, children will learn the basic elements of dramatic scenarios—”Who,” “When,” “Where,” “What,” and “Why”—and use these elements to explore solutions to potential real-life challenges.
Here are the learning experiences children will gain in this camp, which help expand their Chinese oral language skills, problem-solving abilities, and creative thinking:
- Two-year-olds will explore stories and theater through sensory and musical movement activities.
- Three-to-five-year-olds will learn to use ink painting as a medium for storytelling and background expression, exploring the black, white, and gray tones of ink art. They will also interact with traditional tools such as brushes, ink, rice paper, and inkstones and participate in papermaking activities.
