Exploration Camp: Grades 1–8
A Hands-on Summer Approach to Traditional Academics and Community Awareness

Students have a variety of interests and skills. Young people not involved with learning Mandarin in the summer find CAIS’ Exploration Camp a wonderful way to move forward their core academics. They also engage in educational, fun activities through weekly field trips revealing the history and natural beauty of the Bay Area. Various activities and projects teach students about how they connect with their community and environment. Sports and active recess periods provide healthy outlets for energy and encourage fitness.
Core Academics
English
Explorers study myths, tales and legends from around the world—all their appropriate grade levels. They look across cultures and time at stories and storytelling to find commonalities as well as differences. Students create their own legend to explain a phenomenon in our world, using reading, drama, art, dance, music and writing.
Math
Explorers work with CAIS math teacher Rita Soukhova, a Johns Hopkins Teaching award winner and advisor to our award-winning MATHCOUNTS team. They adventure through various aspects of the number system, and learn fun, exciting math games that expand their minds and improve their abilities.
Science
Children explore science through hands-on projects like making photo journals, worm composting, environmental cleanup, a recycling contest, studying solar energy and alternative forms of transportation, and paper-making.
Field Trips
Activities and destinations may include hiking at Land's End, the Randall Junior Museum, Coyote Point Museum, the Bay Model (Sausalito), Año Nuevo State Beach, San Francisco Zoo, Maritime Museum, Redwood City salt flats, Ocean Beach cleanup, Ocean Beach/Aquatic Park hike, Crissy Field environmental project, and the Exploratorium.
