One More Week to Order 30th Anniversary Wear

Help commemorate CAIS’s 30th anniversary with 30th anniversary apparel that can be ordered through the CAIS Boutique on the CAIS Community Wiki. The deadline for ordering 30th anniversary apparel is Monday, October 24. Order via the CAIS Community Wiki here.

What’s the CAIS Community Wiki, you ask? It’s a community run web page that includes all of the great things that happen at CAIS, but outside of the school classroom, such as family camp, soccer leagues, parent events and more.

If you did not receive your wiki invitation and wish to be part of the conversation, please go to the CAIS Community Wiki here .

Yerba Buena Family Day Happening This Sunday, Featuring CAIS Alumnus

Yerba Buena Family Day is downtown San Francisco’s biggest daylong family block party happening Sunday, October 16 and features free admission, special art activities and free performances for children and families at the Yerba Buena Center as well as various venues located within one to two blocks of one another, including SFMOMA, Contemporary Jewish Museum, Children’s Creativity Museum and Museum of African Diaspora.

Taiko drummer and CAIS alumnus, Wesley Yee will perform on the Esplanade Stage in the Yerba Buena Gardens at 2:30 p.m.

Activities are happening throughout the day from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 16.

For detailed information, click here.

CAIS to Participate in California ShakeOut Earthquake Drill

Next Thursday, October 20 at 10:20 a.m., CAIS students, faculty and staff at both Oak and Waller Street campuses will take part in the statewide earthquake drill called the Great California ShakeOut. The event is organized to bring awareness throughout the state about earthquakes and how to prevent disasters from becoming catastrophes.

Classroom teachers will spend time before the drill explaining why this is happening, who is participating and what needs to be done.

At Waller Street, the drill will be conducted in a developmentally appropriate way with games where the teachers will surprise the children and say 'drop and cover' a few times a day to practice leading up to the 'real' earthquake drill that will occur at 10:20 a.m.

If you would like to learn more about earthquake preparedness to help prepare your home and talk to your children about what to do when an earthquake occurs, the Great California ShakeOut website has a wealth of information including videos, games, suggestions on how much food and water to have on hand and so much more. Please visit shakeout.org for more information.

Walk to School Event Wet and Fun!

Thank you to everyone who came out for the International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 5. Despite a heavy downpour of rain in the morning, more than 15 families, teachers and administrators showed up at Patricia's Green (park at Hayes and Octavia) to participate! NCIS reported 20% fewer cars on Fell Street/Hickory Yard drop off that morning.

The event was not only a fun way to build community, but also about behavior change, and showing kids how much fun it is to walk to school, not just for a one-day event. We encourage you to leave your car at home and consider walking to school every day or once/week or once/month!

A link to the walk to school day photos are available through our community wiki and can be found here.

Thanks to parent organizer, Mai Mai Wythes, who organized the event.

PA Meeting Next Week

The second PA meeting of the school year is this Tuesday, October 18 at 8:00 a.m. in the parent lounge of our Waller Street campus. All CAIS parents are members of the PA and welcome and encouraged to attend all meetings during the school year.

Items on the agenda include:

  • Autumn Moon Festival planning and location for next year
  • Playground safety
  • Middle school community efforts
  • Wiki tutorial part two

  • Raise Money for CAIS While You Shop Online

Did you know that online purchases can raise a lot of eScrip revenue? More than 800 major online stores including Amazon, Best Buy, Macy's, Expedia and Toy's R US will donate up to 10% of your purchases to our CAIS Parents Association.

But signing up for eScrip does not automatically capture online donations! You also have to:

    • Download and install eScrip's AutoEARN, a webapp for your browser, which directs participating stores to make their donations.

    OR

    • Access participating stores through the eScrip Online Mall website before making any online purchase. Note: Amazon only works with online mall.

If every CAIS family, faculty and staff member were to make this effort, the increased revenue would help the Parents Association to support student and classroom needs in addition to the community activities the PA already supports.

Parent Education Opportunities at SpeakSF – Free for CAIS Community

SpeakSF is an organization that brings parent education events on a variety of topics to communities of several independent schools around the city. Because CAIS is a participating school, all CAIS families, faculty and staff are invited to the SpeakSF speaker presentations that will happen throughout the school year.

The first event is happening this Tuesday, October 18 and New York Times bestselling author Daniel Coyle will lead a presentation on unlocking the secrets of talent.

Click here for details about the upcoming presentation and to learn more about SpeakSF.

If you have any questions about SpeakSF or upcoming events, please contact CAIS parent organizer, Patricia Martell.

Meet Rick Herrick, Annual Fund Middle School Chair

When Rick Herrick – parent of eighth grader, Jackson and fifth grader, Christopher – is not playing music or helping Fortune 500 companies with branding, design and communication needs through his company, Salt Branding, you can find him chasing down eighth grade families to talk about the importance of giving a gift to the school through the Annual Fund campaign. Eighth grade families, if you haven’t given a gift toward the Annual Fund drive, you can expect a call or email from Rick.

Because of Rick’s leadership, Jackson’s eighth grade red class has taken the lead with 85% of families committed to giving back to CAIS this school year. That level of support is tremendous this early in the school year. Rick thanks all the eighth grade families for continuing to show support for CAIS, even in their last year.

Rick would like us to remind you that if you see him at a soccer game or in the hallways, you don't need to avoid him…he knows where you live!

    Annual Fund Update
